These soft cookies with sage and candied oranges are perfect snack for spring and summer day. I have been wanting to bake cookies with citrus and herb combo and found a refreshing match with fresh sage and candied oranges.

Sage and Candied Oranges
If you are not familiar with sage leaves, they have woodsy, citrusy flavor and commonly used in dishes with pork, chicken, vegetables, or pasta. One of the most popular dishes with this herb is butternut squash ravioli in brown butter. Butternut squash pasta with brown butter is delicious with sage so why not incorporate it into buttery cookies?
Adding citrus to baked goodies is one of my favorite things to do and candied oranges and sage really complement each other! Normally, I make my own candied oranges, but for these cookies, I used a packet of candied orange slices from Trader Joe’s. I used them before and these orange slices are sweet, but have wonderful, fresh citrus flavor.

Shortbread Cookies
These delicious, not too sweet shortbread are my go to cookies. They are totally worth it even if you have to chill the dough for at least 2 hours before you can bake them! Specs of sage leaves and candied oranges make a pretty pattern when you roll out the cookie dough too! I was able to make 30 cookies using a 2½” cookie cutter and when I helped myself to couple of them, I got sage leaves and candied oranges with every bite but without overwhelming flavors.
You can make all kinds of fun, flavorful cookies with a simple shortbread dough. Add fresh citrus or flower waters like I did with my Hearts and Roses Shortbread Cookies and Orange Blossom Bunny Cookies!

Cookies and Ginori Teacups
It’s time for cookies and tea, and my ceramic Ginori teacups are absolutely perfect! I talked about these Ginori cups in my Ahmad Tea post, but just how cute and fitting are these teacups with sage leaves in the front!
